A true story
The $42 invoice that started Unveil
In 2025, tariffs were constantly in the news. Somewhere along the way, the $800
exemption that let small orders from abroad skip import duty went away. Like most
people, I wasn't tracking any of it. A few days after that rule changed, I ordered two
phone cases from dbrand. $99.80 at checkout, in US dollars. It felt like any other
order.
Eight months after delivery, a FedEx invoice showed up: $42.75
in import duty. That's 43% of what I'd paid, on phone cases.
To be clear, dbrand did nothing wrong. The order shipped from Canada. Maybe that was in
the fine print all along and I never caught it. Maybe their policies have changed
since. Would knowing have changed my mind? Maybe not. I like the brand, and I might
